Every leader has their own unique leadership style, one that they’ve honed and mastered over time, one that they are comfortable with.
“People ask the difference between a leader and a boss. The leader leads, and the boss drives.” These are the words of Theodore Roosevelt who was the 26th president of America, a soldier and an author. He believed that all leadership styles fall into 2 categories, leading and driving.
To fill all the ‘hats’ Theodore wore as a soldier, an author, and a president, he embodied significant drive and determination. He had a vision and the will to succeed. He worked hard to build the support and respect of others so, was he a leader or a boss? Most likely, both, with his determination and passion enabling him to evolve from boss to leader.
Who is a Leader?
For a leader to be truly successful, they must lead by example, and inspire their team members to fulfil their highest potential to generate the best results. True leadership is a step up from simply handing out demands to your ‘subordinates’ while you sit and wait for them to produce the results.
A true leader sets standards for others to live up to. They do things that others wouldn’t always expect, such as arriving early before their employees or taking on a greater workload than others, leadership is about sacrifice.
Good leadership entails supporting those you lead in their growth, ensuring that they’re given the chance to utilise their strengths. A good example is South African first president Nelson Mandela, who could have chosen to stay in power if he wanted, nothing would have stopped him, however, he chose to give others a chance to grow under his guidance, he urged them on.
A good leader understands the best way to influence those around them. They are adept at gauging the motivations, strengths and gaps of others. A good leader uses this knowledge and skill to bring about the best results for the business.
Being a leader is about standing out from the crowd in a positive way. Well known successful leaders faced obstacles and challenges and they chose to conquer all odds to bring out the best in themselves and in those around them.
What Kind of a Leader are you?
Are you the kind of leader who takes control of their own destiny?
Are you the kind of leader who insists on others doing things you’ve never attempted yourself or are you the type of leader who tries out something first and encourages others to follow your footsteps?
Are you a leader who openly asks for certain behaviours from others that you are unable to demonstrate or are you the kind of leader who models excellence and urges others to be great?
Good leaders know how valuable their team members are, and encourage a healthy rapport with them for better results overall.
